farm project

This project was initiated by Jared Ingersoll in 2007 and has seen many people within the industry and community come on board.  The goal of the farm is to supply quality seasonal produce to Danks Street Depot and other local businesses.  The future vision for the farm is for it to become a site for education, to build peoples knowledge of food, nutrition, taste, seasonality and sustainability. Why?  To cook food that is grown as close to the cafe as possible; because there is much underutilised land in the city; the city provides a great ecological opportunity to grow food due to the rainfall; to expose people to produce; and finally because we believe it will be fun and benefit the community. We aim to work in a transparent and inclusive manner and to work with council and community to achieve these goals.

If you have any enquiries or input into this '6 sense' project please email valentyna@danksstreetdepot.com.au

Farm Diary

Current
Compile all information of farm models we have viewed.  Identify exactly what we are aiming for in terms of the type of produce we would like to grow, amount of land needed, percentage of cafe's produce we hope to get from the farm, farming methods and level of sustainability.  Work on project plan and proposals.
August & Septmeber
On Monday 4th August, Kate from Danks Street Depot visited CERES urban farm in Melbourne and spent the day working on the farm,  learning how the farm works and how it was established, click here to view images from the day; consultation with experienced urban farmer; seek  urban farm models from established projects in America, Canada, Melbourne and UK.  Calculate finances needed to begin and how to make financially sustainable in the future.  Work on proposal for location and initial funding or sponsorship.
